How much does a Garage Door cost?

In addition to the design, style, functionality, and added safety features, price is an important factor in the decision on whether to upgrade or simply repair your Garage Door.

Having a base price in mind can make it easier to decide on the finer details, so we’ve put together this comprehensive guide to give you an idea of just how much it could cost for that new Garage Door. (Of course, for an accurate quote, you can always get the team at Garage Door Solutions to visit your home, perform a full measure and take you through the options).

There are several factors to be considered when asking the question: What is the cost of a new Garage Door?

What size Garage Door do I need?

Typically, your Garage Door has an option of three sizes with a height up to 2.29m high. Roller garage doors can exceed 2.29m in height. Single-Width Garage Doors range from a width of 2.4m to 3m.

A double width garage door ranges from 3.001m width to 5.100m width.

Double Width Garage Doors are often incorrectly perceived to be double the cost, however, this isn’t true! Read on to find out more on this.

At Garage Door Solutions we have options for wider openings. Our Extra Width Garage Doors range from a width of 5.101m to 6.600m

How much clearance space do I need?

Once you have determined what size garage door you need, you will need to determine what headroom, sideroom and back space you have available. Various types of Garage Doors require different clearances.

Headroom is measured from the lowest point of obstruction on the ceiling to the bottom of the lintel, it is the amount of space needed for the door to operate. Sideroom is measured from the garage opening on either side with no obstruction.

Backspace is required for when the garage door opens overhead or uses some overhead space. A Sectional Garage Door will require more backspace than a Roller Garage Door.

There are four types of Garage Doors:
  1. Roller Garage Doors
  2. Sectional Garage Doors
  3. Tilt Garage Doors and
  4. Flex-A-Doors®
Roller Garage Door Clearance Requirements

Manually operated Roller Garage Doors (Garage Doors without an opener or motor) require a headroom clearance of 400mm, with a backspace clearance of 450mm and sideroom clearance of 80mm.

Automatic operated Roller Garage Doors require more sideroom than a manually operated roller garage door. A sideroom clearance of 135mm is required for automatic operated roller garage doors. Headroom clearance of 400mm and backspace clearance of 450mm is required.

Sectional Garage Door Clearance Requirements

A Sectional Garage Door with standard headroom requires 350mm. Low headroom requirements are 200mm. Additional labour and charges may incur in a low headroom situation.

140mm sideroom is required on each side of the Sectional Garage Door. Due to a sectional garage door opening up and overhead, a backspace of 3550mm is required.

Tilt Garage Doors Clearance Requirements

A Tilt Garage Door requires 150mm headroom and 100mm sideroom.

Flex-A-Door® Clearance Requirements

The Flex-A-Door® is perfect where there is limited headroom. A manually operated Flex-A-Door® (a Garage Door without a motor or opener) requires 80mm headroom. Automatic operated Flex-A-Doors® requires headroom of 130mm. A minimum of 100mm of sideroom is needed.

What Style Garage Door do I Want?

If you have answered the above questions, you will now have a better idea of what style of Garage Door is best suited for your garage. As previously mentioned, there are 4 types of Garage Doors: Roller Garage Doors, Tilt Garage Doors, Sectional Garage Doors, and Flex-A-Doors®.

Roller Garage Doors

Roller Garage Doors lift vertically up and roll around a drum. A Roller Garage Door has a corrugated design, the wider the garage opening the deeper the corrugations will be.
